New River Inlet 5/7/11

Met 2 new friends at the dock @ New River Marina on saturday morning Jared & Tim they are from Midway NC and usually run out of Holden Beach , They run the 22ft Nauticstar Tenacity ,They had contacted me about fishing out of New River earlier in the week since they are not used to this inlet and are going to fish the SKA Divison 1 & 9 this year in hopes of heading to the national Championship...
We looked for some pogies inshore but they just have not showed up in the usual places ,,,, armed with a box of cigar minnows, some clark spoons & zozuri's we head out of New River Inlet ..... Anyone who has not been out of the inlet this year the last set of red & green cans are setting on the sand @ low tide .. you actually have to go north of them at least 100 yards to get out the inlet .......
made the turn and headed south we get the clark spoons & zozuri's in a few minutes we catch some nice king mackeral catching size bluefish ...... we travel down to the ledges off of SurfCity we mark some bait and soon we have an app 25lb Kingfish sky right beside the boat , this Kingfish is so close to the boat we see a fish in her mouth .. only problem it was not a fish we have a hook in :-( we work the area for a while longer and catch a 4ft long shark and nothing else .......... We then turn the Tenacity toward Christmas Rock and make the 18 mile run ,,,,,,,,,,, Nice bait in the water and the whole ocean there seemed to be Dead .... well except for some of the biggest Black Sea Bass I have seen in a very long time ... these fish are hungry even hitting a dead cigar minnow on the down rigger set at 25ft in 65ft of water .
but all in all it was an awesome day on the water with 2 new friends
